Sensitization on weekly iron folic acid supplementation
One day Sensitization Programme on Weekly Iron Folic Acid Supplementation (WIFS)
programme was held to sensitize the School Nodal Teachers of Hunli and Roing Block at
Anchal Samiti Hall, Roing on 7 December 2013. The training programme was organized by
District Health Society under the aegis of National Rural Health Mission, Roing.
Apart from Medical Officers, DRCs, CRCs and nodal teachers, Abu Saring, DAEO was also
present on the occasion. Highlighting about WIFS and other school health programmes under
NRHM through power point presentation, Dr M Basar, DRCHO Roing informed that WIFS is a
free of cost health programme given by the Government. Goals of WIFS are to improve
human capacity and productivity, to increase school attendance and learning capacity, to
eliminate gender disparity in secondary education, improved infant survival health and to
reduce anemia related maternal deaths. Its ultimate aim is to build a healthy nation. The
programme implementation includes intake of iron folic acid tablet once a week under
supervision, de-worming with Albendazole 400 mg tablets every six months, screening
children for anemia and further referral, information and counselling about iron rich foods and
anemia prevention. He further informed that IFA tablets are available free of cost in Govt. &
aided schools and anganwadi centres. He also highlighted about the achievement of the
DMO Dr Al ok Yirang while appeale to the nodal teachers to extend their helping hand as in
other health programme. While informing that the district is soon to get a Polio Free Certificate
from WHO which is the ultimate result of the effort of teachers and doctors of the district since
the beginning of Pulse Polio Immunization Programme from 1995 onwards. He further sought
the same cooperation and efforts from the teaching fraternity which would bring a good fruit in
terms of healthy society in the long run. He exhorted them that your little effort in this
programme would not go in vain but will definitely bring successful result though it may take

time. DDSE M Lego, also exhorted the nodal teachers present to implement the programme in
toto saying that teachers are the only person which can reach to every nook and corners
where no other departments can reach. He said, “Since we are in direct touch with the target
groups, we much accept the responsibility to implement it sincerely”. Expressing serious
concern over the absent of some nodal teachers in the sensitization programme, he said to
initiate stern disciplinary action against the absentee teachers.
Attending the inaugural session Sandeep Kr Singh cal ed upon the nodal doctors and
teachers to implement the programme in letter and spirit. He further emphasized on
counselling through face to face interaction especially by the lady teachers to the adolescent
boys and girls which are mostly the victims of anemia deficiency and added that if we can
make the adolescent healthy than only we can hope for a healthy society in days to come.
