Exelon Corporation’s DC-IN-A-BOX™ Substation, a GridApp™-Supported Core
Project, Receives Utility Automation & Engineering T&D 2005 Project of the Year Award

Pittsburgh, PA, March 17, 2006—Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC), operator of the
GridApp™ Consortium, today announced that a GridApp™-supported core technology project—
Exelon Corporation’s DC-IN-A-BOX™ Substation Design—has received the 2005 Utility Automation &
Engineering T&D Project of the Year Award in the category of Transmission & Distribution (T&D)
engineering.
Utility Automation & Engineering T&D announced the award during the DistribuTECH 2006 conference in
Tampa, Florida, on February 7, 2006. As a 2005 award winner, Exelon’s DC-IN-A-BOX™ transformer
project will be featured in Utility Automation & Engineering T&D’s, March 2006 issue.
“Exelon’s new Distribution Center (DC) substation design has redefined the fundamental nature of an
electric substation in suburbia. What began as a request for a less expensive 34 kV–12 kV substation
developed into a state-of-the-art compartmental transformer that can be applied in virtually any setting,”
said James Crane, Research and Development Manager for Exelon Energy Delivery.
In 2005, Exelon installed and tested the first three DC-IN-A-BOX™ transformer sites in the world, with
funding support for field performance evaluation from CTC through its cooperative agreement award from
the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE). “We
recognized the broad-use potential of the DC-IN-A-BOX™ technology and are pleased to have the
opportunity to support its full development, so other utilities can replicate its use,” said Paul Wang, Program
Director of the GridApp™ at CTC.
The tech transition is indeed happening. “The OE has recommended the use of Exelon’s new design
technology for consideration in rebuilding the electric infrastructure in New Orleans after hurricane Katrina.
Also, five utilities have made inquiries to Exelon indicating their interest in deploying this technology,” said
Eric Lightner, Program Manager at DOE. According to Thomas Callsen, Exelon Consulting Engineer and
DC-IN-A-BOX™ award recipient, Exelon is constructing two additional DC-IN-A-BOX™ sites in 2006,
with another eight identified for 2007.
The DC-IN-A-BOX™ transformer combines a 10 MVA pad-mounted transformer with high-power circuit
breaker technology, resulting in a compact electrical substation design without many of the typical
drawbacks of siting, operating, and maintaining an electrical substation. The beneficial features of the new
design are best shown in the photographs below, as the new design to the right is completely self-contained
and electrically isolated—with no need for barbed-wire fences and spill containment protection measures—
and has a smaller footprint than a conventional design to the left. This innovative design provides the
means for electric utilities to provide power to about 2,000 homes.
