Highland Park Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir Saturday 10:30 A.m. Winspear Opera House (Gold track) Friday 2:00 p.m. Meyerson Symphony Center (Blue Track) Since its founding in 1926, the Highland Park Presbyterian Church has placed a strong emphasis on the importance of music in worship. The church’s principle ensemble, the Chancel Choir, serves its faith community in more than 100 worship services each year by contributing congregational hymns, responses, and anthems; singing for weddings and funerals; and leading annual Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Holy Week services. Additionally, the Chancel Choir performs four concerts of oratorios with the Highland Park Orchestra each season. Recent tour performances include Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and Mozart’s Requiem at the Vienna Konzerthaus and Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem at Carnegie Hall. Comprised of singers from all walks of life and various levels of musical experience, the Chancel Choir is a non-auditioned ensemble that has a weekly 150-minute rehearsal. George Gregory Hobbs has been the director of music at Highland Park Presbyterian Church since 2005. He conducts the church’s Chancel Choir, the Highland Park Chorale, and the Highland Park Orchestra; administrates a large church music ministry; and serves as artistic director of the Highlander Concert Series. His educational background includes degrees from Florida State University and Northwestern University, where his dissertation focused on the choral-orchestral compositions of Anton Bruckner. Hobbs has served on the faculty of Florida International University, and led church music programs in Florida, Georgia, and Illinois.
