3) Captains’ Reports.

Saturday 1st XI. P. 17. W. 8. WD. 3. LD. 1. L. 3. Aban./Incomplete 2. Canc. 1. Position 3rd. CI2 reported that, after relegation in 2009 the 1st XI were looking to bounce straight back to the premier league but we narrowly missed out finishing third – just one win behind runners-up Blackheath. Some below par performances meant we had a slow start to the season losing to Folkestone, Sandwich and Ashford but had a good win away against Hythe. A closely fought victory against Sibton Park was followed by another poor display with the ball against Canterbury where we were lucky to be saved by the rain. So, 2 wins from the first 7 games when we came up against league leaders Blackheath for one of the games of the season. They got away to a bright start but excellent spells from the spin of Mudit and Johan saw us restrict them to 183. The chase was quite incredible with wickets tumbling regularly but Johan held steady and smashed a brilliant century. At 8-117 the win was a long off but Yogi was joined by Ash Forde who dug in to score 14 important runs and the two all but saw us home to a 1 wicket victory, with Johan ending up 122 not out. We were unfortunate not to have our overseas player Raza until Round 9 but he announced his arrival in style by taking 5-15 to help bowl out then table toppers Whitstable for 59 which we then chased down for none in just under 8 overs. Another comfortable victory over Harvel was followed by another poor performance away at Folkestone when we were bowled out for 130 chasing a modest 200. This however was to be the last negative result for the season as we went on to dominate Hythe, Sandwich and Ashford – just failing to take the final wickets on each occasion and ending up with winning draws. At this point we were still in contention for a top two finish and visited league leaders Sibton Park. Unfortunately the weather had the final say and we journeyed all the way back up the motorway without a ball being bowled. This meant we were now hoping for other results to go our way and despite a nervy chase of 150 against Canterbury then an 8 wicket demolition of Blackheath the gap to second was just too much. The last round saw us away at Whitstable and with no chance of being promoted we gave a few of the youngsters chance to show their worth. Charlie Le Bosquet made his maiden first team 50 and Callum Lennox and James Jones – with a combined age of 29 – opened the bowling and took an early wicket each. The highlight of the match though was undoubtedly Raza with a stunning 211 off 130 balls including 10 sixes which helped us to a massive total of 7-419dec. He also chipped in with 3-16 to help finish them off for 204. Individually, the batting was dominated by myself with 721 runs (3x100s, 2x50), Johan 592 (2x100, 3x50) and after a few games finding his feet Raza showed his quality too with 492 (1x50 2x100). Disappointingly though there were only 2 other scores over 50 for the rest of the season. On the bowling front new additions Ashley Forde (14) and Ankit Patel (10) bowled some useful spells on occasions and Will MacVicar was tight with the new ball on his return from school commitments but for the most part our seam attack lacked any real threat on a consistent basis. Spin was dominant with Johan taking 29 wickets @ 19 and Raza 26 @ 9, the latter at times was unplayable. Mudit Dayal (12) also bowled some excellent spells of his leggies until injury cut his season short. Our fielding wasn’t too bad, Duncan Spencer tidy as always behind the stumps but our ground fielding in particular really needs improvement. As has often been the case in recent seasons availability was a problem for much of the season – particularly the second half. With the second team also struggling plus fighting to avoid relegation we tried not to disrupt them too much and at times it was very difficult to get an 11 out. I’d like to thank all those players – some young, some old – they know who they are – who were happy to help us out. Finally special thanks as always to Peter Wiseman for his tireless performances in the score box. Saturday 2nd XI. P.18. W.4. D.2. L.10. Aban/Incomplete.2. With only 4 wins in the season it’s not surprising that the second team were relegated. The main issue was availability throughout the season from players of both 1st and second team standard. This inconsistency of availability meant that the 2s used 45 players throughout the season which could not lead to a settled and consistent side. I would at this stage like to thank the many club members that responded to the unashamed begging to complete the side on a Friday or Saturday morning from either Isley, Billy or me. I would also like to thank our umpires Geoff, Mike McCulloch and Chris Jones and to Ruby for deciphering the scorebook and adding to the play cricket website. Although the season ended in relegation, I would like to concentrate on some of the positives: One of the main tasks of the second team last year was to push forward the many talented younger players we have in the club. Billy has ensured that through the academy the transition to league cricket is a smooth passage and I would say that the club will be much stronger once they are playing regular men’s cricket. The youngsters we played with last year are more than capable of taking the two’s back up next year and hopefully kicking on and progressing to first team standard. I would like to specifically mention James Jones who for a 14-year old has bowling capabilities of a more mature player bowled well for us early season and finished by taking wickets at first team level this year, Simon Abrahams who after a shaky start showed good character and played a match winning innings against Dartford with 49 not out; Tom Purwar who consistently bowled well without much reward and showed all round ability hitting a 57 against Sandwich; Jamie McCulloch who batted at number 3/4 and scored effortless 20-30’s. I believe next season Jamie will kick on to convert those into 50’s and coupled with his off spin bowling became in integral member of the team. This was an important season for Charlie Le Bosquet who progressed and one of the season’s highlights for me was his match winning innings away at Sandwich with 116. Ross Piller who batted steadily for us when not being pulled up to the ones also showed much improvement and looked very capable at this level and scored a couple of fifties and always set the standard in the field . Tim Radford also bowled well when available at the end of the season adding variety to the ‘pace’ attack. Of the senior players Matt Bundy as a new member was a real asset to the team as both our top scoring batsman and consistently picking up wickets with his medium paced outswing. Nick Buddell was, as ever, keen and enthusiastic and contributed with some key supporting and match winning innings (Dartford and Gore Court). The pick of the bowlers this year was Jerry Pitblado collecting 26 wickets and a memorable spell against Dartford of 5-28 taking 3 wickets in the first over to set up the win. Other players who did well were: Marc Cashman who contributed with good runs and wickets, Dan Grice for consistent wicket keeping (and I appreciate his juggling playing with parental responsibilities). Richard Cashman for occasional runs and ever available advice. It also has to be said that these three with Pitbull and Budds also contributed a lot to maintain the team’s humour during some pretty difficult sessions. Other players who contributed through the season were Clive Tyrell with his wicket keeping and off spin, Ben Cronin, Mushie Punjabi, David Evans until injured (again), Jim Carroll and Rod Hiho who regretfully left to go back to Australia during the season and will certainly be missed in the bar. One of the biggest holes in the team was the unavailability of Matt Grice who in 2009 contributed with over 700 runs and 30 wickets. It was appreciated by the side that although could not play as much as he would have liked due to a chronic back injury often stepped in at the last minute to fill the side and tried everything he could to help. Hopefully next year with some rest and rehab, he’ll be able to play a full season which alone would make the second team too strong for the division we are entering next season. The most memorable game for me was a bottom of the table clash against Canterbury late in the season. During the week availability was terrible and on Thursday we had 8 players and no wicket keeper. Up stepped Thommo, Chopper and Ben Cronin at 10.00pm on Friday night. I kept wicket (which was a better option than my bowling at that time). We needed 20 points which has to be said at that stage looked as likely as getting an LBW off Geoff Randall Piller. So when the toss was won we elected to bat on a good surface. The batting was opened with Richard Cashman and Chopper who managed an opening partnership of 70 with a memorable display of disrespectful and effective application of their full repertoires of slogs and smears with Chopper almost making a 50 with an enjoyable and morale raising innings. Ross Piller compiled a cultured 50 however the inning started to fall away and with some last over hitting by the middle order we managed to get just over 200 which has to be said looked a little below par. It was key that we got off to a good start and Tim Radford and Marc Cashman gave us that by picking up 3 early wickets and bowling tightly. This was backed up by tight spells by Pitbull, Chopper and Matt Bundy who nicked a couple of wickets and Thommo after decades of retirement seeking his 500th league wicket. Then James Jones cleaned up the rest of the Canterbury batsmen with an outstanding spell of 4-14. An outstanding achievement bearing in mind the league position and selection difficulties but a thoroughly enjoyable team effort that was celebrated late until the night.This win led to improved performances however other results did not go our way so by then it was a little too late. Some narrow losses against Canterbury earlier in the season by 2 runs and failure to take the last wickets against Hartley and Harvel costing us dearly. If next year availability of key players improves across the club and younger players continuing to grow into men’s league cricket then I believe that the second team should enjoy an enjoyable season in 2011 and hopefully bring some depth to the first team squad. Saturday 3rd XI. P. 16. W. 8. L. 8. Canc. 2. CW3 reported on the 3rd XI winning as many games as we lost but that didn't reflect what was a very positive season for the Thirds where we introduced a number of younger players to senior cricket and gave players like Calum Lennox and Tom Purwar the opportunity to build experience of league cricket and go on to play in the 2s. To give you an idea of the talent we have coming through the system the following played a number of games for me; Jack Thomson - a very useful off spinner and bat Henry Fisher - a talented all rounder chosen for the Kent Emerging Spitfire U14 squad Dan Edghill - an accurate and economical seamer Will Engel - a talented middle order batsman Bobby Harris -1 know has the talent to start making big contributions with the bat. A couple of players such as Shiv Talukdar and Daniel Alexander made brief but very useful appearances and I anticipate them appearing more frequently next season. So they are the future but the regular senior players who make up the core provide the balance in the side with Dave Baldwin representing us in the top 25 run getters in the league and making a highest score of 80* against Roan and Lambethans in a game we won. Apart from some sparkling innings such as Tom Purwar's 80 against Hayes, Chopper with 70 against HSBC and one brief flash of brilliance from Cashy Snr. who made 89 in the first game of the season against Sydenham and helped us win a tight game, in the main, unfortunately, our batting let us down throughout the season. Apart from some notable performances such as James Jones’ maiden 50* made in the dark at 8.30pm against one of the league’s top bowling sides and us winning with 4 balls to spare, and Richard Reed getting a couple of 50s, nobody really dominated the batting by building a series of big innings. All this puts a lot of credit on the bowlers who often did not have many runs to work with or who bowled out teams relatively inexpensively for us to chase. Three of them appear in the top 25 in the league stats: Greg Dale who took 32 wickets at 15.91 with a 5/33 and Ramesh Solanki with 29 at 14.45 and 4/25 in the top 10 indeed at 5&6, and Calum Lennon with 16 at 26.38 just outside that. Jonesy only played a limited number of games but returned a season’s best of 6/24. We are privileged to play at the County ground in Beckenham and it gives our younger players the opportunity to experience playing conditions that are the very best in the league, in some ways this highlights their achievements even more. An enjoyable season in all respects, good team spirit and,
apart from a couple of games, good availability.
Finally I want to say thanks to the guys who make this team operate in such a well-oiled manner, in
particular Greg who acts as co-skipper and is a fantastic help both off and on the field and Dave
Baldwin who unassumingly gets on with it and helps organise all the tasks at the ground on the day -
brilliant! A couple of other people to thank like Clive Edghill and Brian Engel who transport and
always give us support.
Sunday Wizards.

AT4 reported on the fortunes of the Sunday Wizards:
Well, what a difference a year makes.
Last year we won 3 out of 18, and I was bemoaning lack of consistency with the batting, too many
loose shots and no real penetration in the bowling. With more or less the same personnel, this season
was as good as the last was bad.
Why?
Batting was the key, which was just as well as I lost 14 tosses and we were chasing most games.
It looked at the start that we would have a fairly settled top order, but after 6 games a slimmed-down
Darth having belted 250 runs at 50 pulled a large fetlock and was never seen again.
Rosco, the two Harrises and Charlie Le B were all more consistent this year, but I think it’s no
exaggeration to say that the success of the season was hugely increased by one man’s extraordinary
season. Duncan Tyler may never bat as well again. I doubt anyone will. Maybe we should have
seen it coming. In the very first game he had advanced serenely to 99 when he smashed one at gully
who never saw it. It hit him on the shoulder, rebounded to cover point, where it was caught. Some
might have reacted differently, but Duncan walked off smiling. Did he know something we didn’t? In
any case, that turned out to be merely his 4th highest score. In addition to 3 hundreds he scored 7
fifties, one of them that 99.
959 runs at 119.88!
I’ve no idea how many 4’s he hit. 150? But he did hit 2 sixes. Two. Why? Because he doesn’t need to,
he hits the ball along the carpet, between the fielders. And times the sh*t out of it! One of those sixes
was caught at deep square, in front of the tennis netting. It was a one-handed blinder. Duncan was
about to walk off, when he realised the catcher was wearing pink shorts and flip-flops, and was
carrying a pint of Youngs. It was Twads. After Duncan, Rosco got the next most runs at 380, Bobby,
Darth and Will all 250 plus. And of course Raza got a few .
The bowling was more spread about, but with JJ’s increasing pace and control, Clive’s interesting
variety and Macca’s economy, we had a steady attack, but when you bowl first all the time I guess
that’s all you need! Chopper’s 7-46 was as surprising as it was welcome, as bereft of opening bowlers
against Tennyson, he bowled gentle outswingers which they were clueless at playing, and at one time
had 7-6 !!

Thanks to the whole team, it was a team effort on and off the pitch.
To Ray, a huge amount of cricket gets played at Foxgrove these days, he works like a Trojan.
And to Nick for his sandwich-less teas. I like them, and most others do.
Trace, for continuing to improve our fixture list, which he does, every year, and of course to Rubes for
his scoring who’d put it in the minutes anyway if I didn’t record it!
Sunday Merlins.

GP5 reported on his first season as Merlins’ captain:
Back in April as I began my first season as skipper of the Merlins, when I phoned round checking
availability for the season, there were only 4 players from 2009 available. Although we managed to
get a side out for the first game, the prospects for the rest of the season did not look good at all and I
feared we would not be able to fulfil all our fixtures.
With the invaluable help of John Abrahams and Mike McCulloch, and with Jamie McCulloch
returning to the fold, the Merlins became a side. We regularly fielded throughout the season 3 or 4
adults with the rest of the team being juniors. The regular seniors who persevered were Danny
McConnell, Colin Staniford and of course myself.
All the juniors made excellent contributions throughout the season in particular Jamie McCulloch,
Tom Purwar, Calum Lennox, Will Engel with both bat and ball and Simon Abrahams with the bat and
in the field. A special mention also to 13-year old Jack Abrahams who was only supposed to play in
one game when we were short and ended up playing the whole season!
Team highlights were the 10-wicket win v. Chislehurst - a 171 unbeaten opening partnership between
Jamie McCulloch and Jack Abrahams
1 wicket wins in the final over v. HSBC and South Bank where Tom Purwar scored 96 not out and
chasing down 256 v. Woodcutters in our Cricket Week game when the skipper managed to run 2 all-
run 4`s at the end!
Low points were defeats to Bickley Park and Bearsted when we were bowled out; only chasing 130 on
each occasion.

5) Chairman’s Report

Seniors A dry summer saw a season that was successful in many areas. Primary amongst the successes was the success of the 1st XL and the continued development of the junior section. The first team led the way amongst the Saturday league teams finishing strongly in third place in Division 1, only just missing out on an immediate return to the Premier league, despite winning 9 of the last 11 completed matches. Having had the two county contracted players allocated to other Premier league teams and two other first team regulars choosing to ply their trade elsewhere the squad could have done without the delay in overseas player Raza Ali Dar arrival due to the vagaries of British and Pakistani bureaucracy but once he did arrive the team played excellently and will surely be amongst the front runner for promotion next summer. Raza was a joy to have at the club and he always looked dangerous with the ball and a batsman of very high class and I am delighted to say we have resigned him for next summer. Particular mention must go to his magnificent double hundred in the final league game of the season away at Whitstable, a Beckenham record. The game was also notable for the opening attack of Callum Lennox and James Jones having a combined age of about 30 and making the early inroads with the new ball! This further highlighted the success of our youth programme. Skipper Chris Isles also stroked a scintillating double ton in a magnificent pre-season knock at Foxgrove, and was superb all year with the bat, as was Johann Malcolm, who led a truly awesome one-man charge to chase down a winning score at Blackheath. With Raza and all other squad players returning next summer the team looks well placed for an assault on a return to the Premier league, assuming some recruitment can be done to increase the size and strength of the squad. That lack of 1st team squad size plus dreadful availability in general meant the 2nd team had a poor season and were relegated to Division 2. Beleaguered skipper Terry McDowell never really had a regular ‘core’ of players available regularly and also had to contend with the irreplaceable loss of Matt Grice through injury. The 3rd XI, again enjoying the facilities of the County Ground, had a satisfactory season with 8 wins, maintaining there league status. Availability was reasonable and skipper Chris Whitaker was able to select a ‘core’ of 5-6 experienced players each week supplemented by the ever increasing flow of junior players. The Sunday sides also felt the benefit of this flow through of junior players as both Wizards and Merlins fielded sides dominated by juniors who clearly enjoyed their Sunday cricket as both teams enjoyed excellent availability and no little success. As positive as the junior performance have been I would be remiss not the mention the stunning season enjoyed by one senior player, Duncan Tyler had an extraordinary season stroking 959 runs including 3 hundreds and 7 fifties at an average over 100, which surely must be a record in Sunday Wizards cricket! Cricket Week was notable for the huge contributions made by the Junior Section. Junior Cricket As for the Junior section, it continues to be a great success. Our initial aim for the junior section was create a local cricketing centre of excellence providing cricket for upwards of 200 members who go on to become senior members, and I am delighted with the progress we have made to that end over the last year. As well as renewing our ClubMark award, we have also maintained our status as Kent Focus club, meaning we have a high quality club cricket infrastructure that provides a vibrant, safe, effective and child friendly cricket programme that leads cricket development in our local area and that we receive direct input from the Bromley district development group, Kent cricket board and the English Cricket Board. This year we also formed the Cricket Academy for the U16 team and selected younger players in order to encourage the elite player development process and progression of colts into the senior Beckenham sides. I am absolutely delighted with the success of the programme with virtually all of the U16 side featuring in senior matches last summer. The Junior Section had another wonderfully successful awards night last Friday to celebrate the season’s success which included producing champions in the U15Bs who won their Division for the loss of only 1 game whilst the U13As only lost twice in theirs. This year’s winner of the Peter Wiseman Award for Junior Cricketer of the Year was won by Bobby Harris. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Matt Grice and team of 12 ECB qualified coaches for the sterling work and also to all of the members of John Abraham’s Junior Cricket Committee and various members of the senior club Cricket Committee without whose work “getting teams together, arranging fixtures and facilities, umpiring, scoring and driving” none of cricket would be possible. As always I would stress that we are always looking for volunteers to help, it is a member club, run by volunteer members and we need your help and I’m not just looking at parents, I’m also thinking of the older colts as well. Please see any member of the committee if you think you can help in any way, you certainly don’t need to know about cricket to get involved. The other huge development this year has been the completion of the 3 bay artificial net facility that you see (or would if it was light) before you. This would not have been completed without the unbelievable volume of hard work by Chris Jones, who spend untold hours working on the facility, my thanks are extended to him as well as Chris Whitaker who managed the funding process, which through our Club Focus status managed to secure funding for 2/3 of the project from the ECB paid I firmly believe now that Foxgrove road is the best cricketing facility in the county if not London. We have superb artificial nets, excellent grass turf nest and the most beautiful historic ground to play at. Added to which the new indoor facilities at Trinity are of the highest order, indeed our senior 3rd team actually plays at the Kent County ground at Worsley Bridge Road, so I feel that we offer our members the very best of facilities as well as the highest class of coaching. The Future Looking to the future of the Section there is still a long way to go in our cricketing development and
we have already had serious discussions on how we market the Club better in order to attract more
Senior and junior members in the face of local competition. We have to look for ways of attracting
external sources to sponsor and fund projects, with the most immediate of these being the essential
development of a second ground.
Foxgrove was overused this summer and as we seek to expand our coaching offering by working with
local school and a host of other areas of cricketing development ,spread the load and junior sides from
Foxgrove and find a permanent home for the Saturday 3rd team, we clearly need another facility of
good standard to spread the load of cricket that we play, the Phoenix Cricket working group has
presented us with local opportunities to develop a second ground and it’s vital that we galvanise a co-
ordinated effort to raise the fund to see this project through.
The new ground refurbishment will cost upwards of £10,000 and we will also need to purchase
sightscreens and covers. This is our next major project and we need your support. Of course we are
investigating funding options and are creating sponsorship proposals (so anybody with their own
business and interested please do let me know) but aside from that any contributions would be most
welcome. I can assure you that these monies will be kept separately from the club accounts and will be
used solely for this project.
Any ideas/ thoughts/ donation would be very gratefully received, how ever small or large so please do
get in touch. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW IMPORTANT THIS PROJECT IS, the lack
of a second ground has been the primary issue holding back plans for the club since I can remember.
The cricket club has genuine momentum and I hope very much to see us carry on developing at the
rate we have been.

6) To receive the Treasurer’s Report.

Due to the exhaustive overhaul of the Club’s finances, the Club accounts had not yet been completed and no accounts were being shown against each Section. They have been worked on since October with issues arising with the main Club reporting. Therefore the accounts are not yet in a position to be circulated but are nearing completion and would be circulated soon. In their absence, JB6 reported a decrease in expenditure leading to a surplus being made which was absorbed by main Club funds. He also reported that the Bonus Ball paid for Raza’a bonus. WGS7 proposed a vote of thanks to NS8 for running the Bonus Ball.
7) League Reports

Kent League
PW reported on points from the recent League Meeting on 13th October 2010: 1) T20 same format. £20 entry. 2) Readers agreement has expired. KCL looking at comparative quotes from other makes (Duke's, Triplex (took old Triplex ball along for viewing). League. Consequently, St. Lawrence are relegated ( and Lordswood reinstated in Premier. Gore

Pointed out that he felt our Junior marketing should be done much earlier than currently due to number
of clubs in our area.
JB mentioned that the new subscription levels had not been done yet but would seek to obtain draft
figures.
9 Nigel Keess – Chairman of Kent Cricket League EV asked if Club wanted him to run Fantasy League again. Yes please. EV also asked if CI could design a simple poster for the T20 Finals Day on Sunday 24th July. CI said he would.
NS Wants to see umpires’ coats worn on Sundays as he believes it creates a good impression on the
Juniors. Supported by WGS.
DV12 Reported that some Junior coaches etc. need to renew various accreditations. He also
mentioned that Hockey Section have some vacancies on their First Aid course.
CW/AT are working on expired accreditations etc.

DT13 Mentioned that Juniors were lacking kit, balls etc. to which MG14 reported no money being
spent.
